You can read a million and one articles on why Hungary is an amazing place to study. This time, we collected the biggest challenges our students have faced while studying in this part of the World. Let’s see the disadvantages of studying in Hungary.
1. Paperwork galore
Immigration comes with a crazy amount of paperwork. This is true for most countries, of course Hungary is no exception. If you want to study in Hungary, you must prepare mentally for the visa procedure, the residence permit waiting game, the bank account opening… But: don’t worry, Budapest International College (or your chosen University) is here to help you with all that and more. Just make sure you always check our messages and read them thoroughly- we have helped thousands of students already, we know what we are saying!
2. Jobs and wages
Hungary being in Euastern Europe is definitely less affluent than its Western counterparts. This means lower wages and generally less busy economics and job market. But: Hungary is also a rather cheap country compared to the West. This is definitely a trade-off, you’ll earn less, but also spend less and have a safe and peaceful environment to live in with universal healthcare and good work-life balance.
3. Language barrier
Hungarian is indeed hard. Ask literally anyone. There are even many lists around the internet showing the Hungarian is one of the hardest if not the single hardest language in the World. But: you must also know, that Hungarians are aware of this and are usually super appreciative if you try. Besides, learning it here, in a native enviroment is actually pretty feasible- many of our students achieved very high levels in it just in a couple of years. So if you are thinking long-term, roll up your sleeves and make use of BIC’s great Hungarian classes.
4. The first 1-2 semesters
Similarly to other countries, it’s also typical for Hungary to introduce the hardest, most theoretical subjects right at the beginning of your studies (calculus, microeconomics, macroeconomics, physics etc.) Believe us, unless you are a born genious, these courses will be the pain of your existence sometimes. But: with good preparation (hello, Foundation programs) and diligence, these subjects are totally managable- and even enjoyable too.
5. Cold winters, hot summers
Pick your poison, we have both! You’ll need both a warm winter coat and short shorts too. But: You can expereience the full range of seasons, you can go on snowy hikes and get a beach tan too with just a few months difference.
