Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering- what’s the difference?

Students today can choose from a large variety of engineering programs. Sometimes the decision seems hard to make, as most of these programs look similar from the outside. But still, there are considerable differences if we look closer. Let’s see if Mechatronics or Mechanical engineering is a better fit for your goals.

As we discussed before, Mechanical Engineering is the mother of all engineering disciplines– this, of course, includes Mechatronics Engineering. Because it’s so fundamental and broad, it work mostly with mechanical design: mechanics, power, control, and manufacturing. Mechanical engineering is responsible for inventions and new technology that help increase productivity and work efficiency. It also works with more traditional sciences, such as laws of motion, force, and energy and it basically works around mechanics, kinematics and dynamics & will give you a foundation of the things and nature around you. In our modern World, Mechanical Engineers are need in all walks of (industry) life. From vehicles to energetics, Mechanical Engineers are shaping the future of machines.

Mechatronics Engineering is a much newer discipline. However it is heavily based on Mechanical Engineering, it also deals with Electrical engineering and Computer Science, developing sophisticated new technologies – or upgrading current ones. (Actually, the name “mechatronics” itself is the combination of “mechanics” and “electronics”). Students going into the field can expect to work with robots, smart machines, automated systems, and artificial intelligence – indeed, they are needed in any area where the physical, electronic, and digital intersect. Mechatronics is a much more narrow, yet exciting and modern field that is now key for developing and maintaining electrical machinery.
