The HVG Diploma 2025 rankings, which assess Hungarian universities based on student excellence (among others), revealed interesting trends and achievements. Among the highlights, 2 of BIC’s universities, Budapest Business University (BBU) and Óbuda University, stood out for their unique strengths and contributions to higher education, as both got listed on the top10 list. The methodology analyses only Hungarian applications, since international student applications are unique to each university.
How the rankings work
The Student Excellence Rankings evaluate universities based on the number of first-choice applicants (how many prospective students chose the university as their first priority), the average admission scores of admitted students, the proportion of students with language certificates, and the percentage of students excelling in high school academic competitions. These metrics provide a comprehensive picture of student quality and institutional appeal.
BBU: Climbing the ranks
Budapest Business University secured the 8th spot in this year’s rankings, continuing to establish itself as a top destination for students interested in business and economics. While it didn’t rank among the top universities in terms of high school competition achievements, BBU performed well in attracting first-choice applicants, surpassing even some of Hungary’s most prestigious institutions.
Óbuda University: A newcomer in the top 10
For the first time, Óbuda University broke into the top 10, tying for 9th place with the University of Pécs. Óbuda impressed with strong numbers in both first-choice applicants (ranking 8th) and high school competition achievements, where it secured an impressive 6th place. These results highlight its growing reputation as a university that attracts and nurtures talented students.
Looking ahead
The performance of BBU and Óbuda University underscores the growing diversity of Hungary’s higher education landscape. With their unique strengths, these institutions are attracting attention and providing new opportunities for students seeking quality education in specialized fields.
Their rise in the rankings reflects their efforts to remain competitive and appealing in an evolving academic environment, ensuring that students have access to programs that prepare them for success in a globalized world.
